OpenAI’s Roadmap
Sam Altman the CEO of OpenAI talked about Open AI’s plans in a talk with Humanloop and revealed a couple of interesting things on their roadmap and mind:
GPU limitations:
OpenAI is currently constrained by GPU availability, causing delays in their short-term plans and impacting the reliability and speed of their API.
Near-term roadmap:
OpenAI aims to introduce cheaper and faster GPT-4, longer context windows, an extended finetuning API, and a stateful API that remembers conversation history.
Plugins and competition:
OpenAI does not plan to release ChatGPT plugins on the API anytime soon, as they lack a product-market fit. They intend to avoid competing with customers, except for ChatGPT, which serves as a smart assistant for work.
Regulation and open source:
OpenAI supports future regulation of AI models but does not consider existing models to be dangerous. They are considering open-sourcing GPT-3 but express concerns about the hosting capabilities of individuals and companies.
Scaling laws:
The scaling laws for model performance continue to hold, suggesting that larger models yield better results. OpenAI will continue increasing model size each year, albeit at a slower pace. This has implications for the timeline of AGI development.
In summary, OpenAI acknowledges GPU limitations, outlines their near-term plans, addresses competition concerns, emphasizes the need for regulation and open source, and highlights the impact of scaling laws on AGI development.
Microsoft AI Designer is coming to teams, Free
Microsoft's AI-powered art-generating tool called Designer is now available in the free version of Teams. Users can access Designer on Windows 11 and generate designs for presentations, posters, and digital postcards. The tool uses text prompts or uploaded images and leverages OpenAI's DALL-E 2 to create designs, with options for customization.
Designer is also accessible through the web and Microsoft's Edge browser. Microsoft plans to monetize Designer through Microsoft 365 subscriptions but has not disclosed pricing details.
Twitter Needs You for AI Detection
Twitter has broadened its crowdsourced fact-checking feature, Community Notes, to address the rising issue of misleading AI-generated images. The new feature, which launched a week after Twitter circulated an AI-created image of a supposed bomb at the Pentagon, empowers and requires users to identify and flag "misleading media."
However, Twitter's trust and safety team, which was previously responsible for identifying deceptive or fabricated content, has been significantly reduced since Elon Musk assumed ownership. No plans have been announced to hire more content moderators to handle the issue of fake images.
Community Notes has been expanded to allow users with an "impact score" of 10 to add notes to specific images in tweets. This impact score is a measure of the usefulness of a user's contributions. These notes can provide additional context or warn users about potentially manipulated or AI-generated media. Twitter has stated that these notes will automatically show up on "recent & future matching images," theoretically ensuring that even if a flagged image is reposted by other users, the attached note will still be visible. However, Twitter has expressed some doubt about its current ability to match all variations of tagged images across the platform.
The company has also noted that the feature, currently in the pilot stage, only supports tweets with a single image. However, there are plans to expand it to accommodate videos and tweets with multiple images and videos.
