OpenAI Launches Shap-E

OpenAI has released a new project called Shap-E, which is a 3D generative model that can create complex and diverse 3D assets with just a single text prompt.

It works by using two computer programs working together to create 3D objects. First, an "encoder" program takes a 3D object and turns it into a set of mathematical instructions called "implicit functions". These functions can be used to create a 3D object that looks like the original one. Second, a "conditional diffusion model" program takes these implicit functions and uses them to create a new 3D object based on a written description provided by the user.

The program is able to create 3D objects that are made of "neural radiance fields" (NeRF), which can make them look like they are glowing.

The model is open-source and available on GitHub, however, it is limited to producing objects with single object prompts and simple attributes.
