OpenAI wants to solve AI Misinformation, hallucinations
As we all know OpenAI’s Northstar goal is to build safe AGI and the biggest issue right now to solving that is “ AI hallucinations” essentially AI saying the wrong thing confidently. Well, OpenAI has come up with a new training method to solve this problem “process supervision”.
Process supervision basically means rewarding the process over the outcome of the “correct answer”, which could be a wrong answer.
Kind of like back in school when your maths teacher tells you to “Show your workings” and then gives you marks based on the correct steps not just your final answer. That’s exactly what OpenAI is doing.
According to Karl Cobbe, a researcher at OpenAI, addressing hallucinations is a crucial step toward building aligned artificial general intelligence (AGI). While OpenAI did not invent the process-supervision approach, they are contributing to its advancement.
OpenAI has released a dataset of 800,000 human labels used to train the model mentioned in the research paper. However, some experts, such as Ben Winters from the Electronic Privacy Information Center, express skepticism and highlight the need for further examination of the dataset and accompanying examples. Concerns still need to be addressed about the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in real-world applications, and the extent to which OpenAI plans to implement it in their products.
Personally excited about this, will keep you all updated on this.
Google AI Search Problem, Plagiarism
Google has recently launched a new AI-powered search tool that generates more accurate responses than competing tools like ChatGPT. However, the reason behind this higher accuracy has raised some ethical questions. The new tool appears to copy information from various websites, presenting it in a semi-plagiarized manner, which could significantly impact the online publishing industry
An example of this tool in action is when the question "Can you store live oysters in the fridge?" was asked. The AI provided a detailed answer, with portions of the response taken almost verbatim from different websites such as "Get Shucked", "Spruce Eats", and "Oysters XO". The system made minor alterations to the copied text, such as swapping synonyms or adding a few words, but the majority of the content was identical to the source material.
This new form of search response has both positive and negative implications. On the positive side, it provides accurate and comprehensive answers directly on Google's search page, eliminating the need for users to visit multiple websites for information. On the negative side, it reduces the traffic to these websites by providing all necessary information directly, which may affect the revenue of online publishers who rely on clicks and views for income. This could in turn mean less new content made and leads to an endless cycle of just recycled content.
As of now, Google's new search tool is still in the experimental stage, with certain safeguards in place to prevent it from generating responses for sensitive topics.
