Microsoft, GitHub, and OpenAI asks court to throw out AI copyright lawsuit

well looks like Microsoft, GitHub, and OpenAI cant code their way out of this lawsuit!

The three companies want to dismiss a complaint that alleges that the AI-powered Copilot relies on ‘software piracy on an unprecedented scale.’

Microsoft, GitHub, and OpenAI want the court to dismiss a proposed class action complaint that accuses the companies of scraping licensed code to build GitHub’s AI-powered Copilot tool. In a pair of filings submitted to a San Francisco federal court on Thursday, the Microsoft-owned GitHub, OpenAI, and Microsoft claim the claims outlined in the suit don't hold up. Claiming Copilot leverages OpenAI's technology to generate and suggest lines of code directly within a programmer's code editor.

ChatGPT gains 10 Million Active Users in 40 Days (Estimate)

ChatGPT, OpenAI's powerful artificial intelligence (AI) language model, has surpassed 10 million daily users in just 40 days, outpacing popular Instagram's initial rapid growth.

This achievement is even more impressive when you consider that it likely represents at least 20 million monthly users, according to an industry expert.

"ChatGPT at >10 million daily users in 40 days," Brett Winton, Chief Futurist at ARK Venture Investment, Tweeted on Tuesday.
For context it took Instagram 355 days to get to 10 million registered users.

OpenAI hires an army of contractors to make basic coding obsolete

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has ramped up its hiring around the world, bringing on roughly 1,000 remote contractors over the past six months in regions like Latin America and Eastern Europe.

60% of the contractors were hired to do what's called "data labeling" - creating massive sets of images, audio clips, and other information that can then be used to train artificial intelligence tools or autonomous vehicles.

The other 40% are computer programmers who are creating data for OpenAI's models to learn software engineering tasks.

OpenAI’s existing Codex product, launched in 2021, is designed to translate natural language into code. The contractors are not computer science graduates, nor do they have advanced coding knowledge. Their skill is writing the kind of basic code that OpenAI hopes to one day automate.

Speedy Gene Editing Made Possible Thanks to AI

An artificial intelligence program may enable the first simple production of customizable proteins called zinc fingers to treat diseases by turning genes on and off. ZFDesign is a new tool developed by NYU Langone Health that can both change and control genes.

Illnesses including cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, and sickle cell anemia are caused by errors in the order of DNA letters that encode the operating instructions for every human cell. Other conditions are caused, not by a mistake in the code itself, but by problems in how the cellular machinery reads DNA (epigenetics).

ZF design overcomes this obstacle by using AI to model and design these interactions. The program can identify the right grouping of zinc fingers for any modification, making this type of gene editing faster than ever before.
