Microsoft’s New AI Could Hurt You
Microsoft's AI system, BioGPT, was released earlier this year as a solution for answering medical and biological questions. In their announcement, they claimed it has achieved “human parity," meaning a test had shown it could perform about as well as a person under certain circumstances.
However, the system has been found to be highly inaccurate, sometimes producing comical and bizarre medical claims due to "hallucinations" in the data. According to Roxana Daneshjou, a clinical scholar at Stanford University School of Medicine, these AI models are designed to sound plausible in language rather than produce accurate results. This is dangerous as there’s currently an Online implementation on Hugging face and in a world where people are asking BioGPT about their symptoms it could give wrong answers. I told it I feel dizzy, it gave a long-winded answer about a study that summarized as there’s a probable chance I might have a stroke.
NOTE: The publicly available version is the base version, researchers have a better version. They still get false info too, lol
Despite concerns about the potential misuse of the model, a Microsoft spokesperson declined to address the accuracy issue. BioGPT is open source, allowing other researchers to verify Microsoft's work, but the license also permits commercial use, which may be concerning in the highly competitive AI startup industry.
Quoted from the Article here are some more instances of false Information
It’s not unusual for BioGPT to provide an answer that blatantly contradicts itself. Slightly modifying the phrasing of the question about vaccines, for example, prompted a different result — but one that, again, contained a serious error.
"Vaccines are not the cause of autism," it conceded this time, before falsely claiming that the "MMR [measles, mumps, and rubella] vaccine was withdrawn from the US market because of concerns about autism."
In response to another minor rewording of the question, it also falsely claimed that the “Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently reported a possible link between vaccines and autism.”
On a Final Note, given that the BioGPT Model can be Trained and Deployed in its current form, its a safe bet to not take any Tools using the model seriously cause as shown above it can be quite inaccurate.
Obviously as more researchers work on it over time it’ll get better but till then stick to your doctor and ChatGPT for Health and Fun respectively.
Microsoft Bing hits 100 million users thanks to AI chatbot
Microsoft's Bing search engine has reached 100 million active users, thanks to the introduction of its AI chatbot. The company claims that the Bing Chat feature has attracted over a million new users since its launch. However, this figure pales in comparison to Google's 1 billion users. Microsoft is aware that it is still a small player in the market, but any progress is significant, especially as we move toward an AI-powered phase. A third of Bing's new users are entirely new to the search engine, indicating that Microsoft's AI chatbot is drawing people away from rival search engines like Google. Bing's engagement has also increased, with users conducting more searches daily.
DuckDuckGo Launches AI-Powered Search
DuckDuckGo, the privacy-focused search engine, has launched a beta version of its AI-powered summarization feature, DuckAssist, which can provide direct answers to simple search queries. The search engine is using natural language technology from OpenAI and Anthropic, along with its own indexing of Wikipedia and other reference sites to source answers. DuckAssist will only be available through the company’s apps and browser extensions and is free to use. The feature has been developed to help users find factual information more quickly, but users will be able to disable the feature if they wish.
Personal Take: This might be the most sensible implementation of AI search I’ve seen so far.
