Meta’s New HACMan AI

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Meta AI have developed a reinforcement learning strategy called Hybrid Actor-Critical Maps for Manipulation (HACMan) to address the challenges of non-prehensile manipulation in robotics. Non-prehensile manipulation involves tasks such as pushing, flipping, and sliding objects, which are difficult for robots to perform. Previous techniques have had limited success, mainly with simple motions or specific object geometries.

HACMan achieves a high success rate in simulations, with 79% success on unseen, non-flat objects. It also outperforms baseline methods in training success rate. The researchers demonstrate dynamic object interactions using real robots and different object shapes, showing the potential for real-world applications.

The researchers suggest that HACMan can be extended to cover other manipulation tasks, such as grasping, and that it holds promise for advancing robot manipulation across a wider range of objects.

Microsoft Says GPT-4 Thinks Like a Human, Test Results

Microsoft researchers compared ChatGPT AI versions and found GPT-4's clever response impressive.

In a study exploring various challenges, GPT-4 showed a deep understanding of a basic reasoning exercise involving stacking objects. It suggested arranging eggs in a grid on top of a book, demonstrating physical-world comprehension.

Surprisingly, GPT-4 not only arranged the items but also provided instructions to prevent the eggs from cracking, displaying human-like reasoning. The researchers were astonished by GPT-4's ability to reason similarly to a human.

The findings indicate progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), but researchers caution that GPT-4 is not perfect or comparable to human capabilities. While AGI advancements raise concerns, GPT-4 currently exhibits only "sparks" of AGI.
