Renowned AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton warned in a recent 60 Minutes interview that today's chatbots may soon surpass human intelligence, with the potential to manipulate or "take over" if we don't act quickly to regulate the technology. Hinton believes AI can already reason and understand better than claimed, and could outperform humans in just 5 years, bringing enormous benefits but also risks like unemployment, bias, misinformation, and autonomous weapons. His warnings reinforce the urgent need to address the societal impacts of rapidly advancing AI.
Google launched new features in its Vertex AI search platform, integrating the medically-focused model Med-PaLM 2 to help healthcare organizations unify disconnected clinical data sources like EHRs, notes, images, and genomes. The updates enable intuitive exploration of patient records through natural language and structured queries, alongside security measures like encryption. Med-PaLM 2 can provide contextual answers to clinical questions using specific patient information. Google is aggressively expanding its AI healthcare offerings by tackling fragmented data, an area with major potential to transform medicine through AI.
ChatGPT's mobile app continues to see growth in installs and revenue, hitting new records of 15.6M downloads and $4.6M gross revenue in September. However, revenue growth is slowing from 30-39% in prior months to just 20% in September, indicating potential saturation of its $19.99/month subscription. Competitor Ask AI brings in more revenue currently through ads, but ChatGPT nets more at $3.2M in September. Lifetime installs total 52.2M, led by Google Play's 9M in September. The App Store drives more revenue at $3M of the total. The U.S. remains the largest market, accounting for 60% of ChatGPT's mobile revenue.
