Microsoft AI Event Recap
Microsoft is introducing generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, named Copilot, to its Microsoft 365 suite of business software, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Copilot is built upon a large language model, a type of AI software that has been improved in recent years to better understand and respond to text. Microsoft is touting the Copilot features as being more powerful than OpenAIās ChatGPT embedded into Microsoft 365.
The Copilot in Word feature will provide people with a first draft to edit and iterate on, saving time. It is currently being tested with a small group of customers, including eight in the Fortune 500. The technology will debut in Microsoft 365 in the months ahead. Microsoft executives demonstrated some of the capabilities of its Copilot tool during an online presentation, including its ability to create celebration plans for family members and to more easily create emails and send business proposals.
Another AI by Google
This time around it's in the healthcare space.
Google has unveiled a range of new artificial intelligence (AI) healthcare tools, including an AI chatbot that can help people identify their medical symptoms, and an enhanced search feature that informs users if a doctor accepts Medicaid. Google's chatbot, called Med-PaLM 2, has demonstrated its expertise by consistently passing medical exam questions with an 85% score. Google's system is being trained to retrieve medical knowledge, answer medical questions and provide reasoning. However, Google admits that there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that its technology can work in real-world settings.

AI-generated images from text can't be copyrighted, US government rules
The US Copyright Office has stated that works created solely by AI technology cannot be copyrighted in the US, as copyright law protects only material produced by human creativity. However, the office has left open the possibility of granting copyright protections to works that contain AI-generated elements if the traditional elements of authorship were produced by a human. The level of human creativity involved in a work is a significant factor in determining whether it can be copyrighted. The office has launched an initiative to explore copyright law and policy issues related to AI and plans to solicit public comments later this year on a range of copyright issues relating to the use of AI.
