Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that DeepMind, the AI company acquired by Alphabet in 2014, is merging with Google’s Brain team to form Google DeepMind. The move is expected to “significantly accelerate our progress in AI.”

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will lead the new group, with Jeff Dean, former AI lead at Google, taking on the role of chief scientist. The two teams have had previous disagreements, but the merger is seen as a way to enhance Google’s AI research and products.

Amazon’s New AI Tool for Movies

Ever been watching an action movie with loud explosions and action scenes then boom there’s a dialogue scene and you can barely hear what some actors are saying, you go up to turn the volume up then you burst your eardrums as the next scene is an explosion scene? well I know I have (something like that).

Well Amazon’s new AI tool called “Dialogue Boost”, supposedly uses AI to boost the sound when people are talking, allowing you to finally understand all that whispering that comes right after 20 minutes of explosions.

Dialogue Boost is a tool that will be available on certain Prime Video content and will use AI to isolate dialogue within a given scene and allow you to raise its volume when required. Not only that, but it will also “intelligently” raise dialogue volume to make it clearer during points where background noise is higher.

It is designed specifically for people with hearing loss but can be used by anyone to personalize volume levels.

Uber Eats has partnered with Cartken, an AI-powered robotics company, to use autonomous robots for delivering food in Fairfax, Virginia. An undisclosed number of the 40 Mosaic District restaurants using Uber Eats will use these robots, which have containers capable of carrying 24 lbs. of cargo and use embedded cameras to avoid obstacles.

While these robots move at a slower pace, they could help cut down wait times. Uber has shown a growing interest in autonomous vehicles but sold off its autonomous vehicle unit in 2017 after a woman was killed by one of its cars.
