Google is giving some Pixel Superfans early access to its AI, Bard

Google introduced its own conversational AI chatbot named Bard to compete with Microsoft, ChatGPT, and Bing a couple weeks back but Google has not yet launched Bard. It is now offering early access to Bard to members of its Pixel Superfans program.

The Pixel Superfans program is a community of passionate Pixel users who receive special perks and offers from Google. By giving access to Bard, Google hopes to receive feedback and train the chatbot to answer queries correctly.

Meanwhile, Bing has topped 100 million active daily users thanks to the integration of ChatGPT with its search engine, and Google might be feeling threatened, hence the push to get Bard up and running quickly.

OpenAI on AI Jobs

According to a new paper by OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania, 80% of the US workforce should be prepared for some impact by AI models. The study defines "impact" as the ability for humans to do the same task in half the time with the help of AI, but not complete replacement.

Jobs that rely on science and critical thinking skills, as well as jobs such as cooks, mechanics, dishwashers, athletes, etc are considered safer from AI, while jobs that rely on writing and programming skills, tax preparers, legal secretaries, journalists, and writers are considered less safe.

As AI assistants and ChatGPTs become more common, the study suggests that most of us should be prepared for their increasing presence in our lives.

Nuance Communications, Microsoft's speech recognition subsidiary, has announced Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express, an artificial intelligence-powered clinical notes application for healthcare workers. DAX Express generates a draft of a clinical note within seconds after a patient visit using a combination of ambient AI and OpenAI's GPT-4. The technology is designed to help physicians reduce administrative burdens and focus on patient care.

The notes will be enabled through Nuance’s Dragon Medical One speech recognition application, and will appear in the Dragon Medical One desktop. Nuance did not provide specifics on the cost, but said the technology would be available in a private preview capacity this summer.

AI Puts the Color Back in Black and White Films

Researchers at Graz University of Technology and HS-Art have developed an integrated software application that uses deep learning technology to colorize black and white movies. The algorithm combines interactive and automated coloring techniques and is user-controlled, allowing humans to influence the coloring process. The researchers trained pre-trained neural networks to take over the coloring of historical films and generate authentic and appropriate color schemes. The software can also generate and add artificial film grain for an authentic look. The source code is freely available, but the software based on it, the "Diamant film colorizer," is necessary for efficient use. It has been used to colorize historical footage for documentaries such as ZDFzeit's "Hitler's Power.”
