China’s Biggest AI Company to Roll Out Its Own ChatGPT Rival in Mid-2023

Chinese AI leader SenseTime plans to launch its own chatbot model in mid-2023, the company said, becoming the latest tech company to join the global rush sparked by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

SenseTime said it made major progress in natural language processing and successfully developed a large pre-trained model which will be rolled out in the middle of this year. The model has been trained with more than 100 billion parameters to improve the performance of text generation and human-computer dialogue, SenseTime said Tuesday during its earnings call.

A couple of weeks back they also released Intern 2.5 which is an Open source multi-model model, basically something like GPT-4 that can respond to text and can understand images. If you’re interested here’s the GitHub Link

NASA’s New AI Model To Defend Earth

There are 2 Models

The first one is like a tornado siren for life-threatening storms in America. The model uses AI to analyze spacecraft measurements of the solar wind and predict where an impending solar storm will strike, anywhere on Earth, with 30 minutes of advance warning. This could provide just enough time to prepare for these storms and prevent severe impacts on power grids and other critical infrastructure.

The second one is to develop mission hardware that is significantly stronger than human-designed hardware while also being lighter.

Much like the ChatGPT or DALL-E, the system still relies on human input in the form of a precise brief, detailing the requirements for the part including the load it has to carry and what forces it will be exposed to.

This data is fed into the generative design software, which is able to produce 30 to 40 iterations in a few hours, each improving on the last to evolve an optimal structure.

Amazon’s AI Move

Amazon and Apple have been really quiet in the AI race with the only leak we got from Apple being the internal AI meeting and them buying an AI startup. On the other hand, we only got one leaked meme of Amazon working on an AI Chatbot like ChatGPT. Now we have some news from Amazon’s AWS as they are hosting a Generative AI accelerator. Where they will incubate 10 Generative AI startups, it's worth noting that AWS will NOT be investing in any of the AI startups. They will be will receiving up to $300,000 in AWS credits to help build their companies, access to AI models and tools as well as machine learning stack optimization and custom go-to-market advice. Applications are open for the next two weeks and ten startups will be chosen, the company says.

AWS’ Global Head of AI/ML said: “Our approach to generative AI is to invest and innovate across three layers of the generative AI stack to take this technology out of the realm of research and make it available to customers of any size and developers of all skill levels,”.

Bill Gates Speaks on Elon AI Pause

Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder, and philanthropist stated that calls to halt the development of AI will not solve the issues surrounding AI. Gates suggested that it would be better to focus on how to use AI developments while understanding the tricky areas that need attention. This comes after an open letter co-signed by Elon Musk and over 1,000 AI experts called for a pause in the development of more powerful AI systems.

“I don’t really understand who they’re saying could stop, and would every country in the world agree to stop, and why to stop,” he said. “But there are a lot of different opinions in this area.”

Gates highlighted the complications of enforcing a pause globally and stated that identifying the tricky areas is the solution.
