China’s ChatGPT Rival
China's SenseTime on Monday unveiled an artificial intelligence (AI) powered chatbot called "SenseChat", which it demonstrated performing tasks such as writing an email and a children's story upon being prompted.
SenseChat is based on the company's big AI model SenseNova, said its CEO and co-founder Xu Li.
That is all the information we have on SenseChat for now, unlike Baidu’s Ernie bot SenseChat was live Demo’d on their Monday live stream.
Also, Alibaba Launches Its ChatGPT Rival as well
Alibaba Cloud has unveiled its own chatbot called Tongyi Qianwen, joining the race to create a rival to Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT. The chatbot is currently in invite-only beta testing for corporate clients and is described as a "productivity assistant and idea generator".
Its development is linked to Alibaba's in-house scientific research group, Damo Academy, which first introduced its large language model (LLM) called AliceMind last September. LLMs underpin AI-powered chatbots, allowing them to answer sophisticated queries, generate detailed writings, and code, among others.
OpenAI is considering Opening an Office in Japan
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on Monday he is considering expanding services and opening an office in Japan after meeting with Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss the benefits and risks of AI, including privacy and copyright infringement.
Japan is evaluating the possibility of introducing AI-powered technology, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, after resolving privacy and cybersecurity concerns. Altman expressed his hope that Japan would play a role in adopting AI and rule-making, and build better models for the Japanese language and culture.
One of the major barriers to getting this through is machine-generated falsehoods pose problems for introducing ChatGPT in public offices.
Stability AI Burning through $100M QUICK!
As much as I get that it's expensive to train and maintain models, I remember a Michael Seibel from YC saying “You have to really try to burn that much money” or something along this line.
Stability AI, the makers of Stable Diffusion, the Open Source competition to platforms like Dall-E and Midjourney is experiencing financial difficulties as it struggles to generate revenue despite having raised $100 million. Being Open Source it's quite challenging to generate revenue as you are essentially giving a sizeable chunk of your tech away for free.
Meanwhile, some employees have lost faith in CEO Emad Mostaque’s leadership style. He prefers to give AI researchers radical independence, like handing off access to expensive server time without any oversight, according to people familiar with the company. But one former employee said Mostaque also sometimes swoops in to take over a project. According to reports, Emad will remain CEO but strong executive talent will be brought into management to try to steady the ship.
Baidu AI Sues Apple
Baidu, the Chinese search engine company, has filed lawsuits against app developers and Apple over fake copies of its Ernie bot app that were available on Apple's app store. Ernie bot, which was launched last month, has been described as China's closest answer to the US-developed chatbot ChatGPT.
Baidu stated that it had lodged lawsuits against the developers of counterfeit applications of its Ernie bot, as well as Apple. It also warned against people selling access codes and stated that Ernie bot does not have any official app at present.
As of Saturday, there were still at least four fake apps bearing the Chinese-language name of the Ernie bot in Apple's App Store.
