FDA has now cleared more than 500 healthcare AI algorithms

There are now more than 520 marker-cleared artificial intelligence (AI) medical algorithms available in the United States, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The vast majority of these are related to medical imaging. The first AI algorithm was cleared by the FDA in 1995, and fewer than 50 were approved over the next 18 years. However, the numbers have increased rapidly in the past decade, and more than half of the algorithms on the US market were cleared between 2019- 2022.

Most of the algorithms approved are Medical imaging, Here’s a cumulative list of the function(s) of all the algorithms approved:

- High accuracy of pattern recognition has led to a concentration of market approvals on the imaging side

- Diagnostic aids that can automatically identify critical findings

- Automation of time-consuming functions

- Workflow improvements and automation

- Data mining applications

- Clinical decision support for next steps in the patient's care or to ensure imaging exam meets the guidelines

Google Feels Pressured by ChatGPT

Google's new chatbot, Bard, had a rough start. A promo ad had a major factual error, and employees criticized the rushed and botched reveal event in Paris. Alphabet's chairman, John Hennessy, admitted that Google was hesitant to launch Bard because it was still giving wrong answers, but went ahead with the release cause of competition from ChatGPT.

Google's search engine boss, Prabhakar Raghavan, even acknowledged that AI chatbots can generate false, convincing answers in a phenomenon known as "hallucination.”

So we might just need to wait a longer while before we see Bard in full (and safe) action.
