well, today we saw what happened when there’s an all-round OpenAI outage and all OpenAI products like ChatGPT and Dall E are down including their APIs, you know what happens? 99% of all “AI Startups” are also down.

The reason for the massive outage was not stated by OpenAI but according to their status page, the outage began around 11:05 Pacific and lasted for hours.

The biggest lessons from this outage are:

- People are getting increasingly dependent on ChatGPT

- If ChatGPT is down 90% of the AI Space is Down.

Apple’s AI Event

We’ve all been asking, wen Apple? wen, well now is the time, sort of.

Apple recently held a staff-only AI event at the Steve Jobs Theatre, which was notably low-key compared to other AI announcements from Microsoft, Google, and Baidu. Apple is a secretive company but a few drops came from the event.

At its AI event this month, Apple appeared set on rallying employees and convincing them it isn’t falling behind. Apple’s AI chief told attendees that “machine learning is moving faster than ever” and that Apple has talent that is “truly at the forefront.”

This might either be a sign they are building their own AI or are delusional, I’m going with the former.

Also from reports, Apple did not preview a ChatGPT/New Bing competitor or anything of the sort, which is rather disappointing but as a company, Apple is known to keep calm and only launch when they have something perfect so this might just be them taking their time to perfect their AI Chatbot before any preview.

Another thing that could potentially hinder Apple in the AI race is the company’s ethos against data collection, which Google and Bing don’t have.

Microsoft Research has released BioGPT

Microsoft Research has released BioGPT, a large language model trained on biomedical research literature. The model achieves better-than-human performance in answering questions from the biomedical literature, as evaluated on PubMedQA. The code for the model has been publicly released, and the weights for the large 1.5B model are expected to be released soon as well.
