Google partners with Replit to Take on Microsofts GitHub

For my non-developer folks, here’s what Replit is an Online IDE to write code collaboratively, it needs very little setup… oh and it has just 20 million users. No biggie.

The partnership aims to improve Replit's Ghostwriter (Kinda like Copilot) app by using Google's language-generation AI to suggest blocks of code, complete programs, and answer developer questions. This move is seen as a bid to compete with a similar product from Microsoft's GitHub. The partnership will also allow Google Cloud and Workspace developers to use Replit's collaborative code editing platform.

In layman's terms, with this partnership, Replit gets a better Coding AI from Google and Google gets its “Github Copilot”.

Goldman Sachs Predicts AI Could Replace 300 Million Jobs

A recent report by Goldman Sachs predicts that up to 300 million jobs could be affected by generative AI, which could replace around one-fourth of current work. However, the report also suggests that technological progress may create new jobs and increase productivity, potentially boosting global GDP by 7%.

The impact of AI will vary by sector, with administrative and legal jobs facing the highest risk of replacement, while physically intensive professions face low risk. The report notes that while technological advances in the past have created new jobs, generative AI may reduce employment in the near term but be a net positive long term.

Apple Buys AI Startup

Apple has quietly acquired WaveOne, a startup from Mountain View that was developing AI algorithms for video compression. Apple wouldn’t confirm the sale when asked for comment. But WaveOne’s website was shut down around January, and several former employees, including one of WaveOne’s co-founders, now work within Apple’s various machine learning groups.

The sale was later confirmed by WaveOne's former head of sales and business development, Bob Stankosh, in a LinkedIn post. After almost two years at WaveOne, last week we finalized the sale of the company to Apple,” although the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

WaveOne's technology was hardware-agnostic and could reduce the size of video files by up to 50% by prioritizing faces and other important elements in a video frame. Apple could use the technology to improve streaming efficiency and offer higher resolution and framerates for its video streaming services.
